A delegation from Syria will arrive in Crimea to participate in the celebrations on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the reunification of the peninsula with Russia. This was reported to Izvestia by an adviser to Syrian President Busein Shaaban. Information on the proposed visit of the delegation of the SAR was confirmed by the international committee of the parliament of the Arab Republic. The Syrian Presidential Administration also stressed that the issue of Bashar al-Assad’s visit to the peninsula to participate in the V Yalta International Economic Forum (YIEF) in April is being considered. Permanent Representative of the Crimea under the President of the Russian Federation Georgy Muradov told Izvestia that in the next three months a joint Syrian-Crimean shipping company will be launched.
In Crimea, on March 18, the fifth anniversary of reunification with Russia will be celebrated. At the same time, the celebration will begin on the 16th — on that day in 2014, the historic referendum took place, in which over 96% of the population of the peninsula spoke in favor of the region as a part of the Russian Federation. A representative delegation from the SAR will take part in the celebrations on this occasion.
“Yes, it is planned to visit the representatives of Syria to the Crimea in March. Russia is a friendly country and a key ally. Moscow and Damascus are linked by excellent bilateral relations,” said adviser to Syrian President Busein Shaaban to Izvestia correspondent on the sidelines of the Valdai Forum, which was held in the Russian capital on February 19–20.
He recalled that the peninsula has already been visited by members of the Syrian parliament, as well as representatives of the business community of the Arab Republic.
Information about the upcoming visit of the Syrian delegation to the Crimea on March 16–18 was also confirmed by the international committee of the SAR Parliament. The deputy chairman of the committee, Ammar al-Assad, in an interview with Izvestia, expressed confidence that Syria would take part in the celebrations on the peninsula.
“It will be a great step, we will participate without any doubts, - the deputy assured. He noted that the composition of the delegation is still unknown, most likely it will be representatives of the Syrian parliament and government, participants of last year’s Yalta International Forum.
“Bashar Asad himself is unlikely to visit the peninsula on these dates,” the presidential adviser said. However, she did not said that the Syrian leader would take part in the Yalta Forum. According to her, such an opportunity is now being worked out, and discussions are underway with the Russian leadership.
Earlier, the co-chairman of the YIEF, Andrei Nazarov, told the media that the head of the Crimea, Sergey Aksenov, invited the president of the SAR and received confirmation of the upcoming visit. However, a little later, the Syrian ambassador to Moscow, Riyad Haddad, said that Bashar Asad "is unlikely to be able to take part" in the event.
The Permanent Representative of Crimea under the President of the Russian Federation Georgy Muradov told Izvestia: the YIEF organizers intend to continue contacts with the Syrian side and hope that the President of the Arab country will still visit the peninsula.
“We are planning to devote one of the forum sessions to the issues of interaction with Syria. We hope that Bashar Asad will arrive. “We see no obstacles for this,” the permanent representative said.
According to him, Crimea and Syria have “no end of joint work”. So, the politician recalled, there is an agreement between Damascus and Simferopol on the creation of a Syrian-Crimean trading house and a joint shipping company.
«The trading house is already initially registered, and it needs to increase its activity. Shipping company under development. In the next three months, relatively speaking, we must achieve its formation,” said Georgi Muradov.
Andrei Nazarov stressed that in April, at the anniversary Yalta Forum, the organizers are once again waiting for a large Syrian delegation, which will be represented at a high governmental level, as it has the status of an honored guest to continue the work on the Crimean-Syrian cooperation.
- The investment attractiveness of the peninsula is well known to our Syrian partners. So there are plans to open a flight, to establish a port message and barter. In addition, the Syrians are interested in attracting our construction companies, which will be able to restore the destroyed infrastructure and housing stock, the co-chair of YIEF told Izvestia.

The main celebrations on the peninsula will be held in the largest cities of the region - the very ones that the French delegation intends to visit - on March 16 and 18.
